BRUINS RELEASE TWO PLAYERS
PLENTY OF SPEED AND SIZE AT CAMP
September 3rd, 2010
Day 2 concluded at Bruins camp Thursday evening with the Bruins releasing two players. Nathanael Greter and Justin McMillan were released Thursday evening after two solid days at Bruins camp.
"Both great kids who had a lot of speed and energy but unfortunately it didn't work out for them here so we let them go early on so they can look forward and seek another club to tryout with. A lot of our vets came ready to go this season, so they are really pressing the rookies to impress early on," Head Coach Derek Sweet-Coulter added.
"I'm excited to see both teams going hard, looking to earn themselves a spot on the Bruins exhibition roster. We have guys ranging in age from 16 to 21 here and they all look hungry for a spot."
Team White took day one by a score of 5-4, coming back from a 2-0 deficit early on. With a number of rookies chipping in and scoring some impressive goals. Sweet-Coulter noted, "Everyone looked a little tight to begin with, they all wanted to do it themselves. As the game wore on, they settled down and looked a lot more 'in-tune'. The goalies looked solid tonight, some really nice saves tonight."
On day two, Team Black looked to avenge their opening day loss, and they didn't disappoint by winning with a commanding 9-0 win over Team White. "Yeah the White team couldn't get any bounces tonight, everything went by way of Team Black." Despite the lopsided score, Team White had chances, they just couldn't get the puck past Team Black's goalies. With the pace and intensity up a lot over day one, day 3's deciding game on Tuesday should be a good one to see which team is victorious in the mini-tournament. The goal of the night went to rookie Brett Arnston as he batted a rebound, out of mid-air, off goalie Josh Simpson's pad. "Yeah, everyone in the stands and on the ice was pretty impressed by that one, I think Brett was even surprised how good it looked!"
The Bruins started camp with 37 players and now have 35 players left to decide upon heading into the weekend. With a couple veterans still away at Jr. A camps, the Bruins will be looking to reduce their player total to 30 prior to the exhibition season which starts on September 10th in Fort Saskatchewan where they will take on the St. Albert Merchants.
Bruins Help land local player an NCAA opportunity
Chairman Tim Gramatovich Helps sister of Bruins player
John Hampton earn a shot at an NCAA school
August 17, 2010
Community. Thats what the Bruins stress. As witnessed just recently with Rebecca Hampton's acceptance into Adrian College, member of the MIAA. WIth the help from the Bruins organization, Rebecca was able to earn herself an opportunity with an NCAA school, playing Division III NCAA womens hockey.
"This proves to show that if you want it badly enough, want to do the work it takes and get a chance that you're able to." We helped direct Rebecca get in contact with the right people, and she did the rest of the work on her own merit.
The Bruins would like to congratulate Rebecca for achieving this honor and wish her good luck at Adrian College this upcoming season!

Hampton’s dreams come true
Posted By Shane Jones News Staff
Usually hockey players are hoping the scouts will come calling.
Sherwood Park's Rebecca Hampton called the scouts.
The recent Sal Comp grad was able to earn herself a hockey scholarship with Michigan's Adrian College, thanks to getting in contact with the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA), a leading recruiting source for college coaches and student athletes.
When it comes to finding collegiate athletic opportunities, many athletes and their families can be overwhelmed by the recruiting process and the amount of time required to achieve success.
NCSA helped make the recruiting process a positive one for the Hampton family from the very beginning, leading to the successful result.
"NCSA was what made my recruiting process, without them I would not be flying down to Michigan (this month) to attend Adrian College and be playing the sport I love," Hampton said. "NCSA made my dream come true. Everything fell into place and was so simple with their help."
Through their online tools, NCSA was able to introduce college coaches to Hampton's athletic profile and also helped her stay on track when it came to actively communicating with coaches.
"My experience was amazing," Hampton said. "I couldn't believe all the coaches and schools that showed an interest in me almost immediately."
Hampton received offers from several different schools and was able to narrow her decision down with NCSA helping her to stay in touch with those college coaches.
She felt Adrian College was the best all-around fit — academically, financially and athletically.
Hampton has some advice for those trying to go a similar route.
"Never give up if playing in college is your dream," she said. "My hockey career was literally over until I was told about NCSA. If you just put your name out there, have game tape ready and work hard, anything can happen."

OVER $2200 AWARDED TO PLAYERS HIGHLIGHTS BRUINS DINNER BANQUET
EDMONTON PETROLEUM CLUB
WEDNESDAY JUNE 23, 2010
The Strathcona Bruins hosted their annual Dinner Banquet in style at the swanky Edmonton Petroleum Club located on Kingsway Avenue on June 23rd. Aside from the coaching staff, players, parents, and the numerous volunteers, others in attendance included:
- Jacquie Fenske (Ward 6 Councillor of Strathcona County)
- Bjorn Kinding (Hockey Alberta Coach Rep & 1998 Japan`s Olympic Men`s Hockey Head
Coach
- Don Depoe (The Hockey Program & former ACAC Coach of the Year - NAIT)
- Ron Heller (Peritus Asset Mgmt & 1988 Super Bowl XXIII Champion - San Francisco 49ers)
Peritus Asset Management hosted the event which highlighted the Bruins year-end awards for the 2009/10 season which saw them defeat the Sherwood Park Knights in the first round of the CJHL playoffs and take the eventual Provincial Champion Beaumont Chiefs to a fifth & deciding game in a highly entertaining playoff season.
``The players deserved this. They worked their butts off all season and really came together collectively as a group over the course of the season. The playoffs showed what they`re capable of when they put their hearts, souls, and minds together,`` coach Derek Sweet-Coulter added. ``It was a good end of the season for them. Only a few more weeks till the 2010/11 season starts.``
Some of the highlights included Dan Cordeiro being awarded the Rookie of the Year Award and Most Sportsmanlike player for the season (amassing only 6 PIMS over the entire regular season). Michel Chalifoux & Dan Hoyle shared the Gary Koehli Award for Most Points in the Season. Both players were tied in points (36) at the end of the regular season with equal amount of goals (19) and assists (17). The Unsung Hero award, handed out to the player who exemplifies what being a Bruin is all about, doing the little things on and off the ice without recognition, 2010 reciepent was fiesty Joel Henriksen. Sweet-Coulter added, ``Well what can I say about Toto (Henriksen), he exemplifies what being a hockey player is all about. He`s on the shorter side but he plays like he is 7 feet tall all the time. Doesn`t complain, doesn`t look for praise. He just goes out, does his job, supports his teammates, and his effort is always 100%. We as a coaching staff rarely have to worry about Toto.``
Playoff MVP was awarded to goaltender Casey McGillivray. Casey had a stellar playoff performance, his first CJHL playoffs in 4 years playing, and he made the most of it. McGillivray was one of two graduating players from the Bruins this season (the other being Captain Adam Bruce). Dan Hoyle took home the Team MVP for the season. Amassing 36 points (and sharing top scorer status with Michel Chalifoux), Hoyle had a breakout season. He was heavily relied upon to score the big goals, and play solidly in his own end defensively. A role he relished and was just as effective offensively as he was defensively. ``Dan had a great year, we asked him as a coaching staff early on to commit himself to playing defensively and he responded by being a solid contributor night in and night out.``
The last awards handed out were the Scholastic Awards, each player who applied recieved an award to go towards books and their tuition. The Optimists Club of Beverly and Axe Productions along with the Bruins Hockey Club, helped with the scholastic awards which were handed out to four players: Brett Richards, Tyler Gramatovich, Luke Milne, and John Hampton. On top of that, John Hampton was once again recognized and awarded the Scholastic Award for the Strathcona Bruins. Hampton recieved some additional support by the Optimists Club of Beverly and Axe Productions for his efforts in school and on the ice.
Overall the 2009/10 season came to a quiet end with the 2010/11 season on the horizon.

TRAINING CAMP STARTS SEPTEMBER 1st
BRUINS LOOKING TO IMPROVE
UPON A SUCCESSFUL 2009/10 CAMPAIGN
Three months until the 2010/11 hockey season begins for the up-beat Strathcona Bruins. Its seems not long ago that the Bruins were playing against their foes, the Beaumont Chiefs in the second round of playoffs and falling 3-2 in games to the eventual Alberta Provincial Champions (**Note the Beverly Warriors prevailed 3-2 over the Chiefs for the CJHL title**).
One win. Had the Bruins prevailed over the Chiefs in the 2nd round of playoffs, who knows how far the Bruins could have gone. All that is in the past now, but not forgotten, as the Bruins look forward to the upcoming season with increased expectations and a hunger to win the league crown.
Going into the 2010/11 campaign, the Bruins only lose four spots on paper coming into the season. With two players graduating, captain #61 Adam Bruce and starting goaltender #1 Casey McGillivray, and loosing the services of BC product #19 Andrew Wheeler, who will not be back for his overage year, the Bruins should be in a good position to have a decent season. Currently their roster boasts five overage players, however they can only carry four as the season starts September 17th, so a decision will have to be made during training camp who to go with. Even though the Bruins roster boasts a lot of returning players, Coach Sweet-Coulter and President Odynski are stressing that their opening day roster could be altered more then what is currently needed.
"Some of the vets better be prepared in camp to battle for their positions on this team," Sweet-Coulter noted, "just because we had an okay season, doesn't mean everyone will be back. We are always looking at improving our hockey club and that means always having a competitive team on the ice and a better team within the community no matter what."
The Bruins had a taste of playoff success last season. Now they're hungrier than ever and want more. In three months we'll see just how hungry the bears are as they wake from their summer hibernation.
